Valsts Akadēmiskais koris Latvija” un tā mākslinieciskais vadītājs Māris Sirmais augusta otrajā pusē aicina klausītājus uz 26. Starptautisko Garīgās mūzikas festivālu gada nozīmīgāko un tradīcijām bagātīgo sakrālās mūzikas notikumu. Festivāla četros koncertos šogad piedzīvosim satikšanos ar enerģiski spēcīgo latviešu kordiriģenti Kristu Auderi, kura dzīvo Nīderlandē, bet šobrīd diriģē daudzviet pasaulē, godināsim Stirnienes bīskapa Boļeslava Sloskāna piemiņu, ciemos uzņemot Lietuvas Valsts kori Vilnius”, ar ievērojami kuplu mūziķu sastāvu piedzīvosim Hektora Berlioza Latvijā ārkārtīgi reti dzirdētā Rekviēma atskaņojumu, kas savulaik veltīts 1830. gada jūlija Revolūcijas upuriem, bet festivāla izskaņu svinēsim ar jaundarbu koncertu, atzīmējot arī šī gada jubilāra Ģerģa Ligeti simtgadi. 26.

Viesus no Lietuvas gaidīsim 25. augustā Stirnienes Sv.

26. augustā Rīgas Domā diriģenta Māra Sirmā vadībā būs reta iespēja dzirdēt vienu no monumentālākajiem Rekviēmiem – franču romantiķa Hektora Berlioza 1837. gadā komponēto desmit daļu lieldarbu tenoram, korim un lielam orķestrim, kura atskaņojumu autors bija iecerējis ap 400 mūziķu izvērstam sastāvam. Turpinot ideju tradīciju par franču mūzikas pompozitāti, Berliozs bija aizgrābts ar domu savā mesā radīt monumentālu un episku teātri, lai grandiozā ceremonijā godinātu franču 1830. gada jūlija Revolūcijas kritušo piemiņu. “Manas smadzenes teju eksplodēja no ideju pārpilnības.

The State Choir LATVIJA and its Artistic Director Māris Sirmais invite audiences in the second half of August to the 26th International Sacred Music Festival, the most significant and tradition-rich sacred music event of the year. Over the Festival’s four concerts this year, audiences will experience a meeting with the energetically powerful Latvian choral conductor Krista Audere, who lives in the Netherlands but currently conducts all over the world; we will honour the memory of Stirniene’s Bishop Boļeslavs Sloskāns by welcoming Lithuania’s State Choir VILNIUS; a significantly large number of musicians will gather to perform Hector Berlioz’s Requiem, a piece which is performed extremely rarely in Latvia and which was dedicated to the victims of the July 1830 Revolution; and the Festival will close with a concert of new works which will also mark the 100th birthday of György Ligeti. The Festival’s concerts will take place in Riga and Stirniene from the 18th to the 31st August.

With a programme named Silence Leitmotif, the State Choir LATVIJA will open the 26th International Sacred Music Festival on the 18th August at St. Peter’s Church, Riga, conducted by Krista Audere. “This programme unites contemporary composers whose music expresses an inexhaustible, existential  search for truth and the meaning of our existence.” Observations on this topic have also been expressed by poets Fricis Bārda and Māris Salējs, whose stanzas have been ornamented in music by composers Maija Einfelde and Andris Dzenītis. The evening’s programme will be woven through with the music of American minimalist composer David Lang, from his cycle The Writings, in which, by freely combining sacred texts from the Old and New Testaments, the composer searches for the answers to humanity’s hopes and weaknesses. Meanwhile, Slovenian composer Nana Forte’s opus Miserere Mei (Have Mercy On Me), which uses the text of Psalm 51, will be performed in Latvia for the first time; the piece has a sound which  is similar to the pathos of Romantic music, and promises to be the emotional peak of the evening.

We will welcome our guests from Lithuania on the 25th August at the Stirniene St. Laurent Roman Catholic Church, inviting audiences to the 130th birthday memorial event for Bishop Boļeslavs Sloskāns. After becoming a priest and bishop, Bishop Sloskāns’ life soon converted into a path of suffering and torment, and he endured 17 years of duress and torture in Siberia under false accusations. After his release, when the bishop was exchanged for a Russian prisoner, Sloskāns worked as a professor at the Theology Faculty at the University of Latvia, and after the Second World War he moved to Belgium. Those who met the bishop were deeply impressed by his true holiness. Bishop Sloskāns radiated peace, humility, simplicity and deep love. At the end of 2004, Pope John Paul II issued a decree on the heroism of Bishop Sloskāns’ virtues, a step towards being declared venerable, and Sloskāns’ beatification process continues in Rome. In the concert dedicated to the memory of the venerable bishop, Lithuania’s State Choir VILNIUS under their Artistic Director Artūras Dambrauskas will perform pieces by Mendelssohn, Zakaras, MacMillan, Augustinas, and Latvian composer Dubra.

On the 26th August at Riga Cathedral, conductor Māris Sirmais will offer a rare opportunity to hear one of the most monumental Requiems: French Romantic Hector Berlioz’s 1837 ten-part work for tenor, choir and large orchestra, which the composer intended to be performed by around 400 musicians. Continuing the tradition of ideas on the pomposity of French music, Berlioz was enraptured with the idea of creating monumental, epic theatre with his mass, in order to honour the fallen of the July 1830 French Revolution in a grand ceremony. “My brain felt as though it would explode with the pressure of ideas. The outline of one piece was barely sketched before the next formed itself in my mind,” wrote Berlioz.

To enable himself to write down his floods of music and ideas, Berlioz came up with a special type of shorthand. After the scandalous premiere, the composer gained wide recognition of his creative genius, dispelling doubts about the originality of the young Frenchman’s ideas. A performance of the Requiem leaves just as powerfully grand an impression today. During his lifetime, Berlioz reworked the score of the Requiem twice (1852/1867), making the final changes just two years before his death. This performance of Berlioz’s Requiem will feature British tenor Andrew Staples, the State Choir LATVIJA, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and the Wind Orchestra RIGA.

We will celebrate the Festival finale on the 31st August at Riga’s St. Peter’s Church with the traditional concert of new works, which will also be dedicated to the memory of György Ligeti’s 100th birthday. Pieces written by Latvian composers for the State Choir LATVIJA and conductor Māris Sirmais include Hymni Misericordia (Hymn of Compassion) by Jēkabs Nīmanis, who has used a sacred hymn whose text unites people with common values. Young composer Aleksandrs Avramecs’ work Ex Infinito reflects on the eternity of time, movement and birth, while Renāts Nikolajs Cvečkovskis honours the Virgin Mary in his piece Mama (Mother) for the Dormition of the Mother of God feast day, which is significant in the Orthodox Church. There is great interest around the premiere of young Slovenian composer Matej Kastelic’s mass Lux et Origo in which the composer, who is already well-known in Europe, explores the relationship of mysticism between God and people, explaining: “If one wants to believe in anything – God, religion, or simply honourable society, people, or even love – he must believe in himself first. That is how we should see every religion. This is also the reason for me to keep observing my thoughts and feelings, to deepen my mind – to be able to see the world clearly from my unique perspective. I believe in “God”, that is already in me, for the sake of expressing the best version of myself.” Meanwhile, the programme will end with the unending radiance of György Ligeti’s spiritually ethereal work Lux aeterna (Eternal Light).

Tickets for festival concerts will be available at all Biļešu Paradīze box offices and online at bilesuparadize.lv.
